Double Glazing.
Modern double glazing can improve comfort, reduce heat loss and refresh your property without assuming a third pane is always necessary.
From one replacement window to a whole-house upgrade, we help customers understand the details before choosing a solution.
Explore Triple Glazing ↗Less heat escaping. More comfort indoors.
A modern double-glazed window uses two panes separated by a sealed cavity. This cuts heat transfer compared with single glass, particularly when paired with low-emissivity glass, suitable gas filling, a thermally efficient frame and weather-tight installation.
A well-designed double-glazed system can be the sensible choice for a typical replacement project. That includes semi-detached homes in St Albans, modern homes in Hatfield and traditional properties where proportions and ventilation need careful consideration.

Start with your actual problem.
Select what you want to improve. These are general decision routes, not a diagnosis or a product guarantee.
Check draughts, seals and the existing window's thermal performance. A suitable modern double-glazed replacement may make a substantial difference. Compare the complete-window Uw figure rather than pane count alone.
Explore window installation ↗What double glazing actually improves.
The main benefits are practical, measurable and tied to the chosen product.
Winter comfort
Warmer room-side glazing can reduce the cold-surface feeling near a window compared with old single glass.
Lower heat loss
Suitable modern double glazing helps retain heat, although actual bills depend on the entire home.
Reduced draughts
New seals and correctly fitted frames may address air leakage that comes from failing old windows.
Better sound control
Specialist asymmetric or laminated double glazing can address noise when correctly specified and fitted.
More design choices
Flush, sash, bay, tilt-and-turn and modern casement frames can suit very different UK homes.
Manageable investment
Double glazing is often less expensive and lighter than a comparable triple-glazed system.
Two panes. One carefully built unit.
The two panes are held apart by a spacer and sealed around the perimeter. Low-E coatings reduce radiant heat transfer, while the gas between the panes slows conduction and convection.
The window frame, seals, ventilators and fitting details also influence comfort. Ask for the whole-window U-value (Uw) and not just the glass-centre rating (Ug).

Don't replace more than you need.
Misting trapped between panes usually indicates a failed sealed glazing unit. If the frame remains sound, glass-only replacement might be enough. But distorted frames, failing hinges, significant draughts or widespread deterioration can make a whole-window replacement more appropriate.
We look at the condition, appearance and desired performance before discussing the fitting scope.
A useful double-glazing quotation checklist.
Whole-window Uw
Ask for a certified or calculated whole-window thermal figure for the proposed system.
Glass build-up
Confirm low-E coating, gas fill, spacer and glass thickness, plus safety glass where required.
Ventilation
Agree how the project will meet relevant background ventilation requirements.
Installation detail
Discuss sill, fixing, perimeter sealing, removal, waste and making good.
Security
Check locking hardware and any claimed certified security standard on the exact model.
The final price
Compare like-for-like supply, access, trims, finishing, documentation and aftercare.
Double versus triple. What actually changes?
Compare the product specification and the full installed window, not just the glazing unit. The table is general guidance, not a substitute for a manufacturer specification.
| Consideration | Double glazing | Triple glazing |
|---|---|---|
| Glass panes | 2 | 3 |
| Insulating cavities | 1 | 2 |
| Thermal potential | Strong with suitable low-E, gas and frame design | Potentially higher with a correctly optimised specification |
| Weight & thickness | Usually lighter and slimmer | Generally heavier and thicker |
| Sound reduction | Can be excellent with acoustic glass and good seals | Not automatically better; specification matters |
| Solar gain | Depends on coating, glass and orientation | Often changes with additional coatings and panes |
| Typical cost direction | Often lower | Often higher |
| Best-fit projects | Many replacements and everyday upgrades | Targeted high-performance design and retrofit projects |
For noise and thermal performance ask for tested or calculated values for the exact whole-window system. Different suppliers and frame configurations produce different results.

Glazing is only one part of the window. Openings, materials, hardware, ventilation and design all make a difference. Explore DF's detailed window pages before settling on a specification.

Double glazing FAQs.
The important questions deserve a useful answer, not an automatic upgrade pitch.
Is double glazing still worth fitting in 2026?
For many homes, yes. A well-specified double-glazed replacement can substantially improve comfort compared with older single glazing or failed units. The best option depends on the home, budget and whole-window performance.
What is inside a double-glazed window?
Two glass panes surround a sealed cavity usually filled with air or an insulating gas such as argon. Low-E glass, warm-edge spacers, frame design and correct installation all affect performance.
Is double glazing suitable for a 1930s semi-detached house?
Often, yes. The configuration, glazing bars, ventilation and frame design should suit the openings and house character. Special constraints can apply to listed buildings or conservation areas.
Does double glazing stop condensation?
It may reduce condensation on the room-side glass by keeping the inside pane warmer, but humidity and poor ventilation still cause moisture. Condensation between panes usually means the sealed unit has failed.
Can you replace just a misted glass unit?
Sometimes. If the frame is sound and compatible, replacing the failed sealed glass unit can be a sensible alternative to replacing the whole window.
Can acoustic double glazing reduce traffic noise?
Yes, a correctly specified asymmetric or laminated acoustic unit may perform well. Ask for the actual acoustic test rating of the chosen window, and pay attention to seals and vents.
Does double glazing need trickle vents?
Background ventilation requirements need assessment under the Building Regulations applicable to the project. The correct solution depends on existing ventilation and the window replacement.
Which is better: aluminium or uPVC double glazing?
Both can perform well with the right thermal design. Compare whole-window U-value, appearance, maintenance, ventilation, price and how the opening will be used.
How long does double glazing last?
Life varies with manufacturing quality, exposure, maintenance and fitting. Inspect perimeter seals, operation and any moisture between panes instead of relying on a fixed lifetime.
Is double glazing cheaper than triple glazing?
Typically yes for comparable product ranges, but prices vary by system and design. Compare full quotations that include supply, glazing specification, removal and fitting.
Can I upgrade to triple glazing later?
Not always using the same frame. Triple units are normally thicker and heavier, so the frame profile, beads, hinges and manufacturer approval must be checked.
