Replacement Glazing.
Replacement glazing is not always a whole new window. We help homeowners work out whether a failed sealed unit, damaged pane, tired frame or troublesome hardware is actually causing the problem, then discuss an appropriate replacement or repair.
Replace the glass. Or the whole window?
Too many quotations start with a new-frame sales pitch. The better starting point is identifying which part has actually failed.
Moisture trapped between panes commonly means the insulated glass unit seal has failed. A measured replacement unit is often appropriate if the frame and seals remain sound.
Six situations. Six sensible checks.
Different glazing problems call for different specifications rather than a one-size-fits-all replacement.
Misted double-glazed units
Condensation trapped between the panes can be a sign of failed sealed-unit seals. We assess whether the glass can be replaced in the existing frame.
Cracked or broken glazing
The correct replacement can depend on whether the original pane is toughened, laminated, coated or fitted in a critical location.
Single to insulating glass
Upgrading glazing within an existing frame is only suitable if the profile, glazing rebate, weight and required clearances can accommodate the unit.
Tired glazing in older frames
Timber, uPVC and aluminium frames need a condition assessment before ordering compatible replacement sealed units.
Privacy and safety glass
Obscure glazing, laminated or toughened safety glass can be considered where the opening and regulatory requirements call for it.
Noise-sensitive windows
Acoustic laminated glazing may be worth assessing, but the complete window and its seals affect sound reduction.
The sealed unit is one component.
Insulating glazing usually comprises panes of glass separated by a spacer and sealed around the edge. The surrounding sash, hinges, frame, beads, drainage and perimeter seals are separate elements. Replacing the insulated glass unit addresses a failed unit but does not repair a rotten frame or malfunctioning hinge.
A fogged unit is different from moisture on a room-side or outside surface. Internal condensation is often linked with moisture and ventilation; external condensation can occur on well-insulated glass.
Between panes
Often a sealed-unit issue. The moisture cannot simply be wiped off the accessible glass surfaces.
Inside surface
Review humidity, ventilation and surface temperatures before assuming the glazing has failed.
Outside surface
May be a normal result of outdoor weather and effective insulation rather than a defect.
Around the frame
Investigate gaskets, beads, drainage or installation interfaces.
Repair, reglaze, or fully replace?
A transparent assessment helps avoid paying for a complete new window when the old frame is still serviceable.
| Situation | Likely discussion | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Misting inside sealed glass unit | Replacement insulating glass unit | Frame must be sound and accept the new unit. |
| Broken handle or hinge | Hardware repair | New glazing does not cure hardware faults. |
| Warped, rotten or unstable frame | Full window replacement | New glass cannot restore failed structure. |
| Upgrade to acoustic or different glass | Specification and weight check | Not all frames can accept different unit thicknesses. |
| New entire window | Complete supply and fit | May involve a different Building Regulations certification route. |
What we check before ordering.
Glazing units are made to a defined size and specification; accurate assessment comes before a price.
Frame and bead condition
We look at the existing frame, glazing beads, gasket compatibility and drainage before proposing glass-only fitting.
Glass dimensions and composition
The sealed-unit width, height, overall thickness, glass specification and spacer requirements must be confirmed.
Installation and handover
Agree safe removal, disposal, fitting, operation checks and any excluded repair work.
From an enquiry to clear glass.
A practical, measured approach rather than promising a fixed price from an unverified photograph.
Send photos
Share the property postcode, photos showing the problem and approximate glazing size.
Assess the fault
Identify likely sealed-unit, frame, hardware or ventilation issues and confirm what needs checking on site.
Confirm specification
Measure and agree suitable replacement glass, including safety and thermal requirements.
Fit and inspect
Replace the specified unit where agreed, check the beads and seals and confirm the finished appearance.

Helpful answers. No sales fluff.
Project-specific details matter, especially for glazing and roof openings.
Can misted double glazing be repaired without changing the frame?
Often yes. If the insulating glass unit has failed and the frame is sound, replacing the glass unit alone may be possible.
Will drilling a misted sealed unit restore its insulation?
Drilling or venting does not recreate the original sealed gas-filled construction. A properly specified replacement sealed unit is usually the durable solution for a failed unit.
Can I upgrade to triple glazing in my old frames?
Not automatically. Unit thickness, weight, bead depth, hinge capacity and whole-window suitability must be checked.
Does glass-only replacement need a FENSA certificate?
FENSA guidance excludes glass-only repair work from its competent-person certification scheme. Full replacement windows may fall within a different compliance route.
Does internal condensation mean the double glazing is faulty?
Not necessarily. Condensation on the room-side glass can be affected by humidity, ventilation and surface temperature.
Can I replace one pane in a sealed double-glazed unit?
A typical insulated sealed unit is replaced as an assembly rather than simply swapping one sheet of glass in place.
How much does replacement glazing cost?
It depends on dimensions, glass specification, access, floor height, unit construction, and whether frame or hardware repairs are needed. A measured quotation is more reliable.
Do you also replace complete windows?
DF Installations also offers window installation and supply-and-fit services, including uPVC and aluminium options, subject to the project.
Can you help with toughened and obscure glass?
Suitable toughened, laminated and obscure glazing options can be considered subject to the specific location and supplier specifications.
Where do you offer replacement glazing?
We are Hatfield based and consider enquiries across Hertfordshire, selected North London areas and nearby Bedfordshire, subject to project details.
