Misted Glass Replacement.
Condensation trapped between double-glazed panes? The sealed glass unit may have failed. Discover when the glass can be replaced without changing the entire frame, what affects the cost and how to request a local quotation.
Cloudy between the panes? It may be the glass seal.
Double glazing is normally made from two glass panes sealed around a spacer. If the edge seal fails, moisture can enter the cavity and form persistent misting that cannot be wiped from either side.
This is different from condensation on the room-facing surface, which may reflect indoor humidity and ventilation, or light condensation on the outside face of high-performance glazing. An inspection helps identify which problem you actually have.

What can go wrong with double glazing?
Different symptoms call for different remedies. We help establish whether the glass, its seals, the frame or the room environment is responsible.
Misting between panes
Persistent fog, haze or droplets inside the sealed cavity typically indicate failure of the insulated glass unit.
White staining or water marks
Mineral deposits and staining inside a unit can remain after moisture has evaporated and often suggest long-term seal failure.
Cracked or broken glazing
Broken glass can create a safety and security concern. The correct replacement glass specification must be selected.
Condensation on room-side glass
Usually relates to humidity, airflow, indoor temperature and cold surfaces rather than a failed sealed unit.
Condensation on external surface
Sometimes occurs on thermally efficient glazing under particular weather conditions and is not necessarily a defect.
Ageing frames or worn hardware
Twisted frames, timber decay or worn hinges and locks can make a full-window assessment more sensible.
From misted glass to a clearer view.
The exact process depends on how the glass is held in the frame, the unit specification, access and whether any other defects are discovered.
Send pictures of the misting
Include a close-up and a photo of the full window, the postcode and approximate pane size.
Check the frame and unit
Confirm whether the moisture is trapped, inspect the existing frame and determine required size, thickness and glass type.
Quote and order the sealed unit
Agree glass specification, safety glazing where relevant, access and waste handling before placing an order.
Install and check
Remove the old unit as appropriate, fit and correctly pack the replacement, refit beads and check operation.

Do you need new windows?
Not necessarily. When the frame, sash and operating hardware are sound, fitting a new sealed unit can restore clear glazing with less disruption than replacing the entire window.
If the frame is badly distorted, timber has decayed, seals are failing in several places or the complete installation is unsuitable, a full-window replacement may be more appropriate. We should discuss that difference rather than automatically upsell a new frame.
Where is the condensation?
This quick guide helps separate likely sealed-unit failure from moisture that can be managed through ventilation.
| Where you see it | Likely explanation | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Between two panes | Possible sealed-unit edge seal failure | Ask for an assessment and sealed glass unit quotation. |
| On the inside face | Indoor humidity, cold surfaces and ventilation conditions | Review moisture production, heating and ventilation. |
| On the outside face | Weather conditions and thermally efficient glass | Often clears naturally; monitor rather than automatically replace. |
| Cracked or shattered glass | Impact or glass defect | Seek safe repair assessment; do not handle broken glazing. |
This is practical guidance, not a remote diagnosis. Persistent condensation on secondary glazing or unusual glazing arrangements can have other causes.
Styles worth exploring.

Misted glazing FAQs.
Straight answers about costs, suitability, installation and what to expect.
Can misted double glazing be repaired without replacing the whole window?
Often, yes. If moisture is trapped between panes and the existing frame is sound, the failed insulated glass unit can typically be replaced while retaining the frame.
Can you clean the mist from inside the sealed unit?
The cavity cannot ordinarily be cleaned from the outside. Replacing a failed sealed unit is the conventional lasting remedy.
Is all condensation a sign of failed glazing?
No. Condensation on the room-side or outside glass face is different from moisture trapped inside the sealed double-glazed unit.
How much does a misted glass replacement cost?
Prices depend on size, glass specification, access, number of panes, unit thickness and fitting requirements. DF provides a project-specific quotation.
Is glass-only replacement covered by FENSA?
FENSA’s competent-person scheme covers qualifying full replacement windows and doors, not ordinary glass-only repair work. Any applicable requirements for your project should be clarified.
Can toughened or obscure glass be replaced?
Suitable replacement units can be specified with required safety glazing and privacy finishes, subject to manufacturer availability and the existing frame.
How long does replacement take?
The new unit typically needs measuring and ordering. On-site duration depends on size, access, glazing system and any additional repairs.
Can you replace misted glass in a door?
We can discuss sealed glazing units in suitable doors, including safety glass requirements and access constraints.
Do I need new windows if several units have misted?
Not automatically. Several units can fail while the frames remain serviceable; however, the condition and age of the full window system should be assessed.
Do you cover Hatfield and St Albans?
Yes. We consider misted-glass enquiries in Hatfield, St Albans, Welwyn Garden City and other parts of Hertfordshire, nearby Bedfordshire and North London.
